Ornament to Essence
Overview
This project explores the transformation of an 18th-century Rococo-to-early Neoclassical chair into a modern rattan design merging ornate tradition with contemporary material sensibility. The original piece, known for its delicate curves, gilded ornamentation, and floral upholstery, is reinterpreted through simplified geometry and natural textures. Rattan replaces carved wood and silk, translating the chair’s romantic form language into a lighter, more organic structure suited to modern living.
The redesign preserves the essence of Rococo’s elegance, its playfulness and emphasis on movement; while stripping away excess ornamentation to reveal a more fluid, tactile expression.
